Hi everyone,

Feb applicant here. I am approved as a sponsor as of April 2015 and my husbands file is now currently in process as of October 9th.

My company is has announced it will be downsizing. If in any case I will be given redundancy and I will have to go on social welfare for a month or two while I look for another job, will this affect my husbands chance of getting PR?

Thank you in advance.

You can go on Employment Insurance while you are sponsoring your spouse.

You cannot go on Welfare / Social Assistance. If you do that, your application will be refused.

Thanks for your reply. Is it not possible to go on welfare even when I am approved as a sponsor?

It's not possible at any time during the processing of the application. If you go on welfare at any time, assume the application will be refused.

Once PR is received then it's ok?

No - it will still be a problem.

As part of the immigration process you signed paperwork stating that you would support your spouse for the first three years after he becomes a PR. Since you are assessed for welfare as a family, if you go on welfare anytime in the three year period after your husband lands and becomes a PR, you will have to pay at least a portion (if not all) of this money back to the government.

Are you sure you are not confusing EI and welfare? Usually when you get laid off you go on EI not welfare. EI won't affect the PR but welfare will.
