Hi,

I haven't posted to this forum before so a little backstory. After a year and a half of working with my company I got terminated today.
I'm already in the process of finding new work but my husband (American) and I were in the process of preparing for his immigration. Would my getting E.I. in any way affect my being able to sponsor my husband after I get new employment and we apply for his family class immigration?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, EI is not a form of welfare or social assistance, it's a program that every single Canadian worker pays into, and it's a program that every Canadian is entitled to use, as it's not their fault for being laid off.

As long as you get another job relatively soon, you shouldn't have any problems, but if you're going to be unemployed for a very long time, you will have to provide an explanation to CIC as to how you plan on supporting your husband.

I have absolutely no plans of being without work. As soon as I got home today I went straight to updating my resume and reapplying.

Thank you so much for your answer.
