We didnt sign the back of any photos. Which is super, so it seems. The instructions about signing were under additional family members in the guide. Now I'm confused about whether we should have or not.

I didn't write my name and dob on the back but as I was the only applicant, I guess they we ok with that, when there are more than one person, then they would have to have a way of identifying the person in the photo.
Also I stapled my sheets, keeping the relevant forms and supporting information together and it wasn't rejected.4 months and 10 days after my application arrived in CPC-M I had my passport returned with visa attached.

You are in Colombia, right?

From the region specific forms for Latin America:

12 - PHOTOS
Supply eight ( 8 ) recent photos for each member of your family and yourself. Follow the instructions in your guide (see Photos in section on completing the Application for Permanent Residence in Canada) and in Appendix B: Photo Specifications.
And in the form "Application for Permanent Residence in Canada":

Photos
Photos must have been taken within the past six months and must be identified by writing the family member's name and date of birth on the back of the photo
What I did (and my application went to a visa office in South America too) was: in a tiny envelope I wrote my full name, date of birth, relationship to sponsor, when the photos were taken, and how many photos were in there (eight); in two or three pictures I wrote in the back my date of birth, full name and when the photos were taken. No signature.

Curiously, they only used two out of the eight pictures, and returned me the other six when the passport was mailed back to me with the visa stamped in it. :)

So, without reviewing each country-specific guide, it seems that there are diffrences in the guides respecting photos, and what information (if any) to put on the back of the photos. Here is one area that could do with a standard approach.
