Document checklist: Proof of medical insurance

Hi,

The Visitor Application Document Checklist has the requirement for a medical private insurance for a minimum one year period. My mom and brother are going to visit me for just 2-3 weeks.

I wonder if I understand it right. Should I buy insurance for both of them for a whole year? And what if I buy an insurance and my application is refused?

Medical insurance for one year is mandatory for super visas. Not for TRVs
