Do you need proof of funds when applying to a University/College?

I read that student VISA applications for Canada take 90 days. Does this mean that technically you could be accepted for Uni/College and then apply for the VISA say 4 months before you are due to leave to study and as long as you can provide them and meet all the other requirements you could still be accepted?

Only 90 days? Gosh my daughter has waited 6 months already. In the current circumstances, it's impossible to know how long people might wait for study permits. It might depend on what sort of university you are applying to if they ask for proof of funds. My daughter was asked to provide proof she had finished high school and spoke English. Applied for undergraduate degree. If applying for Winter 2021, I'd not be hopeful, I wouldn't even be hopeful currently for Fall 2021, I'd be realistic.

Thanks for your reply. I did think it was strange that it said that (and the site was apparently updated recently) and asking for real-life examples is always much more helpful.

I think that 2022 may be a far more realistic option (I.e. apply in 2021 when I will definitely have the funds)

Best of luck to your daughter.

You don't need to show financial proof to apply for university or college.

You only need to show financial proof while applying for a study permit. This can be done in multiple ways. By paying one-year fees and showing you have liquid funds to support stay, about 10000 CAD per year.

Do not compare current times with the normal times of study permit. Depending on the location from where you are applying, you can get a study permit in less than 14 days.
