Do you *have* to move to Canada right after PR is approved?

If you get an ITA, and eventually get permanent residence via FSW, are you required to leave your country and move to Canada right away? If not, how does the process work?

I recently got promoted at my current job, and my wife is about to land a job after months of unemployment. If we get an ITA and - hopefully - get PR approved via FSW in ~6 months, I'm worried that we would have to quit our jobs so soon. We'd rather stay at our jobs for ~1 year and then move to Canada once we have found good jobs there. It wouldn't be very wise to abandon our current jobs and move to Canada unemployed.

What do you guys think?

In each Permanent Resident Visa there is a date of its validity, you must enter Canada before the expiry of this date. As a rule it is a year after the medical examination. The immigration law allows that first the principal applicant can enter Canada and the rest of the family can come later but certainly before the expiry date on the Permanent Resident Visa.

No, you aren't required to move to Canada right away. You can complete your landing and return to your country.

You can go back to your home country anytime after you have finished landing. (However you'll need a Canadian address to receive your PR card, which you'll need if you enter Canada.

You will have to be present in Canada for 2 years in 5 years to maintain your PR status.

Landing means that you enter Canada, the CBSA officer processes your file and you become a permanent resident.

You can spend 3 years less a day outside of Canada after landing before you are in breach of the residency obligation.
