Do we need passport ?

I am going to apply for Canada immigration from Pakistan, I want to know initial application requirements as above link shown that For each applicant, you must submit a copy of the most current passport pages bearing name and picture.
Whereas CIC site advice that all supporting documents will be requested at a later date, usually about four months before the visa office is ready to assess. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/immigrate/skilled/skilled-faq03.asp Link-2
On the other side simplified application (Section # 16) as well as application guide visa office from Pakistan (link 1) required passport & detail from my passport respectively,
So need your advice, do we need passport applying for initial simplified application for immigration to Canada for skilled worker category?

hi,well u need a passport only to mention its # in ur immigration form ,u dont need to submit photo copies of any of its pages but u ll need it afterwards.But potentially u shd ve a valid passport for applying,otherwise if u r going to leave the passport # section of the form blank ,the application ll be considered incomplete n ll be returned back.

No problem even if you write APPLIED FOR in the required column and send the same later on when recd , I did the same.
