Hi, my boyfriend lives in Jamaica and we are expecting our first baby in June. I am wondering if I can sponsor him before getting marred?
Also he is trying to get a visitors visa to be able to be here for the birth. Would explaining this reason help or hinder he application?

You must be officially married, or common-law (have lived together 12 consecutive months).

Those are your only options. If you don't satisfy either, then you can't sponsor him.

Thank you, what about the visitors visa? Should the reason be a vacation or the birth of his child?
Sorry don't know much about applying for TRVs... hopefully others can advise.

Put the reason for his visit, which only both of you know. Just a heads up, the likelihood of getting a visitor's visa is slim to none especially where he has a romantic interest(you) in Canada. CIC generally assumes the person will not leave at the end of their visit. Therefore, your partner has to demonstrate significant ties in Jamaica(reasons that will make him go back after visiting) e.g. long term employment, leave of absence from his employer, recent employment letter, proof of funds, ownership of businesses and/or properties, recent travel to other countries and not overstaying his visa, minor kids who depend on him solely(if applicable), etc.

Without the above, I'm afraid your partner is not likely to be there for the birth of his child. Goodluck!

I agree with SenoritaBella. It is difficult enough to get a TRV with a Canadian partner; add a newborn Canadian baby to the mix and I would say the possibility is pretty much non-existent.

Hello everyone.

I am Canadian in live in Vancouver. She was here on a work visa and lived with me during her last 3 months. She is in Korea now and the plan is for me to go there in a few months, get married on paper and have her come back to Canada soon after I return. I want to sponsor her. Will immigration allow her into the country? What should she say?

ShaneandHani - Immigration should let her in since she is from a visa exempt country. She needs to make sure she tells immigration that she is there just to visit and having a return ticket back to Korea that she can show them would help a lot.

How long was your relationship while living in Vancouver?

For proof of a valid marriage, CIC normally looks at what kind of wedding reception was held, and if friends/family attended. Getting married just on paper with no reception at all, may be suspicious to a visa officer reviewing your file. It could be seen as the only reason you got married, was to get her PR status.

I highly recommend while in Korea, you have at least a small wedding reception so you can show some photographs and that family attended it and support the marriage.

The western culture is really tragic to me sometimes.

For your question on visitor visa or Marriage ?

Yes..You have to get married first. There is no two way to it and you can't say that he will be visiting you because of the birth of your child..
You only think..Do CIC immigration people know that the child who will be born will be his ?? R u guyz married ?? Even if you provide DNA to them they will not consider it.

Also once a child is born, i think you have to give the hospital details about father and mother ? i hope they ask about it in Canada.
If you really need him here then dont waste time..get married as soon as you can and then apply for him in the spousal category.

I think everyone will go with my opinion on this or else you are your best judge.

Regaards.

@paul, I was looking forward to understanding why you think the western culture is tragic. Do you mind elaborating? Just curious.
