If your both in different countries its not likely they would ask them to fly from Canada to Nigeria for an interview. Its most offten just the sponsored that goes to the interview.

They interview the applicant, if they do an interview. You'll be interviewed in Accra, Ghana. If they want to ask the sponsor something, or interview him/her, they will phone them in Canada.
If your spouse is with you at the time of the interview, they will probably ask him to come in and interview him too. This happened to me - I was visiting my husband in Nigeria when he was notified of his interview, so we went to Ghana together. The visa officer asked him where his wife was, and he told her I was waiting outside, so the visa officer called me in and interviewed me too.

canadianwoman, do you think that you being present at the interview helped or hindered your case in any way? I would be happy to fly to Accra to be there if Bob Shyno is interviewed, I think it is a great asset for the spouse to be there, but I wonder if actually being interviewed myself could just make it twice as easy for one of us to screw up or get flustered.

I think it hindered our case. I'm shy and don't talk well when nervous. The visa officer interviewed us separately, and we didn't contradict each other, but when I looked at the CAIPS notes I saw several places where the visa officer misunderstood something I said. Some of these misunderstandings were some of the reasons she gave for refusing my husband's visa.
Being there proves your visit to your spouse, which is good. It shows your support as well. But both of you being interviewed makes it possible for a contradiction to be found in your testimonies.

I just asked my husband what he thinks. He thinks it is better for the Canadian spouse not to be there. That way, whatever the applicant says cannot be contradicted. Even if they phone the Canadian, the phone interview would not be as stressful or as long as the actual interview.

I sponsored my previous husband in 2003, and one month after his interview in Ankara, I received a letter requesting that I attend an interview here in Canada. I'm not sure if they still do this sometimes, but this is what happened to me. (My husband was accepted 5 months after my interview BTW)

I accompanied my husband to the interview, however it was not required. Thanks to the forum members who advised me to go with him; I was waiting in the hall while the officer interviewed him. No questions about our relationships. I think that was obvious if I travelled with my husband over the ocean, also while waiting in the hall they could see us together and tell about our relationships. I believe it helped us (also when we were coming back to Canada) that I was with my husband.

When you say 'no questions', do you mean they did not ask about your relationship? What else did they ask about, if you don't mind sharing? My wife has been asked to attend an interview as well..

As I said in the different post:

The interview took about 15 minutes. I accompanied my husband, but they talked only with him. Only 2 questions asked: to do medicals for dependent children and FBI records explanation. With the first one the declaration was filed already that he is not going to sponsor them, but the officer told that it's the old one (however still on the website). They printed the new form that he signed there. We were confused with the details of Fbi records (he overstayed visa time limit in the US), but figured out that there is a mistake with the code section used, and probably thus there a question was raised. So we are going to gather all the necessary documents and send them ASAP.

Hope this helps and good luck!!!

Usually they call for an interview because they are questioning whether the relationship is genuine, but they can call one for other reasons. Here it seems they had no doubts about your relationship, and called the interview to clear up some other questions.

Unfortunately they didn't mention about it in the interview invitation e-mail. We had enough time to gather necessary documents requested before interview and could bring those with us. Just waste of time....
