Do I qualify as a citizen ?

Hey everyone
I am interested to see if I am a Canadian citizen and was hoping someone could shed a little light on the matter.
Alright my Grampy is Canadian and was born in between 1933-36 (Lol not sure what year but some where between them) and he lived in Canada after that before moving to England. My Mum was born in England in 1973, I am pretty sure that she used to have a Canadian passport because she lived with her aunty and went to school in Canada for a while, though not completely sure.
I was born in 1996.

I have been trying to wrap my head around all the change laws and acts, and I am completely confused with the first gen born abroad and second gen.
Any help that any can give would be fantastic.

Your situation is not same as one described in the link;
In that thread the mother was born in Canada, though she did not live in Canada, but children are Canadian citizens because are of Canadian descent.
In your case, you mom born outside Canada, acquired Canadian citizenship because her father was Canadian at the time she was born.
You will not qualify for granting Canadian citizenship being of Canadian descent as your mother does not have the citizenship by birth.

Of course you'll always be eligible for Canadian Citizenship if meet the requirements (PR, living 3 out of 4, etc)

Unfortunately, you do not qualify because your mom was not born in Canada just as era1521 said. However, you can qualify if you meet the residency requirement.

There was a strange case a while back here in Canada after the government imposed in 2009 a first-generation limit on citizenship by descent for those born outside the country.

I disagree with the previous opinions. Although there was a change to the citizenship law that took effect in 2009, which limited Canadian citizenship to the first generation born abroad, it did not remove citizenship from anyone who was already a Canadian citizen. However, for your mother to have inherited Canadian citizenship from her father, her birth would have had to have been registered with Canadian authorities when she was born, OR she could have registered it herself as an adult (though that possibility ended in 2004). If, as you say, your mother once had a Canadian passport, that would suggest that her birth WAS registered. If it was (and having that information is crucial to your case), then you would likely have inherited Canadian citizenship through your mother by being born before 2009. There used to be an interactive questionnaire on the CIC website to figure out cases like these, but it is currently down for updating. Thank you for your help, defiantly looking into more and my mum is filling out applications for her and myself for proof of citizenship; so will seen soon (well not soon in like a few months lol).

Just to be clear, your mother IS a Canadian citizen, at least as of 2009. The question of whether YOU became a Canadian citizen depends on whether your mother was a Canadian citizen when you were born (i.e. by her birth having been registered with Canadian authorities, as was required for births abroad between 1947 and 1977).
