I'm flying with my 3 dogs and cat in a couple weeks. We are shipping our goods before we arrive, but the pets are on the same flight as us. Do I put them on the B4 form?

Thanks

Odd as it may feel, I would add them to your B4/B4A form to make them tax and duty free (IIRC, if you import four, duties become due). Take a look at the Canadian pet importation inspection instructions.

Regarding shipping your goods before you arrive, do your best to time it so that they arrive after you do. They can't clear customs until your B4 is stamped and you really don't want to be paying for pre-inspection warehouse storage (it's premium real estate!)

Really? My dad was going to pick them up at the airport for us as the cosignee?
Also the dogs and cats were rescued so I didn't pay for them. What do I put as their value?

If by 'them' you mean your goods, that's really not a good idea. Ship them right before you leave so that they arrive in Canada after you do. Also, address them to yourself (or your spouse) - whoever's name is on the B4 if you want to have the benefits for a settler or a returning Canadian.

Doesn't really matter - you can even write in rescued in the value. It's more to point out that they were yours before the move to save yourself any aggravation re duties. Since you're importing them on the same flight you are on, you can always edit it easily on the spot if needed as you go through customs.

Have you seen my post on B4s?

Bollocks, yes by 'them' I meant our boxes! We have about 150kg. Can I ask why this isn't a good idea? The shipper said it would be fine :S We leave sunday morning and the shipping office is closed saturday and I have an exam on friday. Argh!

Both me and my spouse are exempt from duty as I've been out of canada for so long.

Ah crap! I just fired off an email to my shipper to see what he says, though I am inclined to go by what you guys say as the company won't be the ones shelling out hundreds of dollars if he gets the info wrong!

I've read that and pretty much the whole CSBA site! It just wasn't clear if pets needed to be on the B4 or not.

The CBSA told me not to put my dog and his kennel in the B4, so I didn't.

I'm not sure why your dad need to pick up your goods. In our case, after clear customs, our goods were delivered to our new home by the same relocation company.

I think it's one of those ambiguous cases, which ultimately may also depend on the officer you get at the border. As I mentioned upthread, since you are landing with your pets simultaneously, it matters much less than if you were importing them at a different time.

Personally I would include them and cross them off if needbe, but it would be equally valid not to and then add them if needbe. I remember reading somewhere that depending on the number of dogs - I think it's if you have more than four (but don't know if it's of one species and thus 3 dogs + 1 cat is in our out) some fees kick in. The CBSA officer would be the one to impose them and thus you can ask when you land and simultaneously import your dogs. It's one of those tricky situations that you just need to understand has no clear cut answer and that it will work out ok ... you just need to emotionally have patience to get there without driving yourself nuts in the process. It's annoying but the border officers really are reasonable and won't have a problem one way or the other. Perhaps, you can put them on a separate B4A sheet and then ask the officer on the spot if he wants to stamp it or not.

You have enough to worry about with the move - don't let the pets on the B4 (or not) bug you ;)

The animals and birds - Pets - should be declared on the Declaration form which is distributed on the flight. B4 forms are for personal effects either accompanied or unaccompanied.

Be sure she has her vaccination records and vet's endorsed (signed) travel forms (forgot what they were exactly)

When we crossed the border the officer saw our dog and completely ignored her... we were quite surprised. We also never declared on B4 (you don't declare your kids on B4 right??)

Because we are only shipping a few boxes, we're not using a relocation company. So the plan was my dad to pick our stuff up and drop it off next week at our new house, when he is moving a load of furniture he has given us, to the new house.

Ok thanks OhCanadiana, yes it is very stressful lol..I've actually done this transatlantic hop 8 times, this is my 9th, but I always had my mum and dad sorting it all as I was just a teenager! Now a few years later, I'm married and travelling with a zoo and responsible for it all ???

I think I will just put them on a separate B4A so we can decide at the border.

And yeah you don't put your kids on a B4, but then again you also don't neuter or microchip your kids :p

All their vaccinations and passports are sorted and they get pre-flight checked the day before we go.

Also, I contacted our shipper again and asked if it was still ok for my dad to clear our stuff, he changed his tune and said no WE have to, like you said. I'm glad I checked. I have the email from him 2 weeks ago, saying it was ok for my dad to do it!! WTF!?
