PR is also a type of VISA
To Stay in Canada you one of the following Conditions

1. A valida VISA or Work Permit which is not expired
2. Implied Status - If you have applied for extension VISA

If your current VISA expires and your PR application is still under process , then you can not stay in Canada. that would be illegal

You have following options

1. Your PR application is processed and you complete Landing formalities before your current VISA expires
2. You apply of extension of current VISA/Work Permit
3. You apply for a new Bridging Work Permit (there are conditions for this. Please refer to CIC web site)

You can stay in Canada legally even if the visa is expired, The only thing is Permit (Study/Work) should be valid through out your stay.

You would require the visa only to re-entry to Canada after visiting any other country.

So, if your permit is valid and have no intention to visit any other country...you can just relax..... This will not effect your Immigration processing.

I have a work permit and I thought the Permit and the Visa meant the same thing. Is there a difference between the two?

You will need a valid work permit to stay in Canada. In case you have applied for PR and received AOR then you can apply for Bridging Open Work Permit.

Yes, both are different.

Work Permit is a Valid document that is allows you to stay in Canada.

Visa is, only if you want to travel somewhere and would like to return Canada, then you need to have visa to enter Canada.


For example : My Visa is Expired back in March 2012 and my Work Permit is valid till March 2014. I didn't renew my Visa as I have no intentions to leave Canada and I dont wanted to waste $150 to renew my Visa. So i still have the expired visa in my passport but valid work permit
