Hello friends,
I am an American citizen and I'm slowly trying to gather all this headache of paperwork. I was born in Peru and I lived there until I was 22. It's been several years I don't go there. It took a lot of work to get my judicial, penal and police certificates but I got them done. It took time to be sent to the USA too. Those certificates expire in about a month and a half. I am still waiting for my FBI records here in the USA. I know these FBI records expire but will CIC make me redo my other records from Peru? Even though I don't live there anymore and I don't even go there on vacations?
Help please

:( I know. thank u cheerio. My aging parents did all that paperwork in Peru and it took them a while to get them with a lot of effort. The thought of having them to go through this again makes me cry.

Hey Lunas,

I think the rule is that the criminal records have to be less than 3 months old when your application reaches CIC. So maybe you will be able to be on time? you can also add an explanation that due to the Peruvian bureaucracy (went there for a short while, so I can relate!), it took you a long time to gather everything, and that you have done your best of your abilities to get it on time. Also explain that you have not been there in a long time.
It might not work, if they are really strict, but you never know.
One other possibility - if the rest of your application is ready - is to send it now, and include a letter explaining that you are waiting for the FBI checks, but it's taking a long time, so you decided to go ahead and send your application and you will send it the FBI checks as soon as you get them. It might delay a bit your application when it reaches the VO, but it might be a good solution.

I did that - was waiting for 2 police checks that have taken me a really long time to get ( more than 6 months), so I decided to go ahead and send my application. I included a letter explaining politely that I was aware that I was missing 2 police records, but I was working on it, and would send them in as soon as I got them. I included documentations of my efforts ( maybe you could send a copy of your FBI request to show that you have indeed asked for them). I got the sponsorship approval (well my partner did! i suppose you are the applicant and not the sponsor), and my file is transferred to my VO (London). I recently ( last week) sent one police record that I got in the meantime, and it should be easy to match up with my application, as I have now a file number etc.

It didn't prevent my partner to be approved as a sponsor - I don't know about the second stage, it might delay it a bit, but not sure - too early to say.

Good luck with your application, hope it helps,
Cheers,
Sweden

Hi Sweden,
That's a good idea. I will start printing and completing what's left on my application. I have a doctor's appointment this Friday. It will be a busy week. I'll send all I have to my husband in Canada this coming weekend. What a mess. In the brighter side, this whole thing has made us speed up our efforts to gather all the paperwork we need.
