Which countries require you to state your religion in your passport? In my passport, it doesn't mention my religion or lack thereof. It just has my full name, date of birth, place of birth, country of citizenship, issued date and expiration date. Or maybe they include religion but just decided not to display anything since I have no religion (I'm an atheist). But then again, I also don't remember being asked for my religion when I last applied for a passport.

If your passport explicitly states that your religion is Islam, you WILL have trouble. I know a guy who knows a Canadian non-Muslim who was born in a predominantly Muslim country and airport staff always hassles him whenever he travels, despite the fact that he's as Canadian as anyone else and isn't Muslim. Not very many countries in the west nowadays are tolerant of Muslims and this is a religion that raises lots of red flags when it comes to travel (both domestic and international) in these post-9/11 times.

CIC doesn't care what religion is mentioned in a passport.

That's what you think.
And just why do you think it matters? Canada is a non secular country. You can be any religion you want.

Although, not mentioned in passport, it becomes important when investigation has to be done. I remember religion and many other details have to be entered in passport application form. Now, other countries will have access to this when candidate does immigration(or anywhere else), I am not sure. However, if they become suspicious on a person, they will get the full information of the person through this source.

In case, she is from India, call the passport customer care number and ask whether record needs to be updated.

Just had a look at the passport form and looks like there is no entry for religion anywhere. So, I don't think your friend has to take care of it. You can neglect it.

Do you know what the word "secular" means? So by "non-secular", you're basically admitting that religion plays a role in Canadian immigration policies among other things. Secular is just a label and the government doesn't fully live up to it. They discriminate on the basis of religion when it comes to immigration and aviation, and people from Muslim countries have it particularly hard. Why else would this one guy I know about, have to go to the airport 5 hours early (rather than the regular 2-3) just because he was born in an Islamic country? The guy is a Canadian citizen for crying out loud, yet they still hassle him and treat him like a criminal. You don't even have to be a Muslim or a citizen of an Islamic theocracy for them to treat you this way. You could very well be an atheist of Arabic descent and they'd still treat you like this. All this stuff about Canadian secularism is nothing but a bunch of talk with no actions to back it up.

You have one side here. There you have this guy's experience:
http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/april-2013-applications-t147883.0.html;msg2686865#msg2686865

"I would to share my feeling. People have wrong concept that who have travel outside the country before applying to citizenship will get Residency Questionnaires. I totally disagree as I have traveled twice before applying my citizenship. I get married before citizenship.

Secondly some people have perception that CIC is targeting Asian community or Middle East which is totally wrong. CIC is doing their job and all the cases depend on the Office who is looking at your file."

So which argument is correct? As with most things, I would say that the truth lies somewhere in the middle, and influenced by your point of view and attitude. But I know many many people of Asian/ME origin who never had any issues at all with CIC/CBSA.

It is not because of his religion that he goes to the airport earlier, but it is because where he was born. There are Christian and other sects living in "Muslim" countries and they get the same treatment.

If they think that he's such a big threat to national security, then why did they naturalize him as a Canadian citizen? Why can't they just leave him alone when he travels via airplane instead of treating him like a scuzball criminal whenever he wants to travel? Discrimination based on someone's country of birth is no different, especially when this person is no threat to anyone (after all, they naturalized him right).

The US (and probably Canada also) will question citizens who come back from certain places considered hostile to the US like North Korea or Iran. This goes for people born in the US of WASP descent. My sister was questioned heavily and had a hard time entering India just because she had a Pakistani visa in her passport even though she is a US citizen of Korean descent.
