Do I need a study permit?

Hi
I am a 17 years old student, I will be 18 in a few months, I came to Canada as a visitor and I registered in a highschool. I will be staying in Canada alone without my parents. I know that I can study for less or equal to 6 months after my entry but I think my highschool will take more than 6 months to finish, so I will need to apply for study permit with my highschool as my DLI, after my highschool finishes should I get a new study permit for university or the study permit with my highschool as my DLI is enough? I will not apply to university this year too.

So you are studying in high school on a visitor visa without your parents? You need a study permit and pay international fees for high school. What province are you in because you may need a guardian too. For post secondary. For post secondary, you apply for a new permit - show strong ties to your country, funds, career opportunities in home country, travel history etc.

"A custodian is optional for minors 17 years of age and older, but an officer can request one on a case-by-case basis."
But given you are registering to attend high school then you best have a guardian especially if your parents are not with you. Your school may provide those services if attending private school. Your decision. Apply and see what happens. Given you will be 18 by the time processed, it may make no difference.

That's OK. I talked to my school about it. Actually I have a more serious problem, I cannot apply to university for fall 2022 and I am going to apply to university next year. So in between (after my highschool ends and my university starts) I cannot live in canada? cuz my study permit for high school ends and I cannot apply for new study permit for university, do you have any idea what can I do?

So you are going to apply in 2023. You will have to change your status to visitor after high school. You can’t live or work in Canada. To get your post secondary study permit, you need to show ties to your home country and the application is processed from there. You may have difficulty getting approved since you aren’t living in your home country. Officers may wonder why you are “living” in Canada as a visitor for so long. You may want to apply from your home country.

Really, he is a visitor ”living” in Canada. Wants to get a study permit to complete high school, then live in Canada for another year until post secondary program begins.

High schools aren’t DLIs so you can’t compare. He is going from high school to post secondary so not the same as going between DLIs.
