I have stayed in Canada for 20 months in total, but not consecutively. I am wanting to know, if I have to stay in Canada 3 years consecutively, or can I break that time up into chunks. (travel to my home country for sometime, and then come back). Can I finish my 3 years that way, or do I have to stay in Canada consecutively for 3 years?

Yes you can. For citizenship, your physical presence (3 years out of rolling 5 years) doesn't have to be continuous. Just make sure that you always meet the residency obligation and you will be fine (2 years out of rolling 5 years). Good luck!

So it is OK to take long breaks from Canada like 5 to 6 months? Can you share your experience. Did you work during the time you were in your home country?

It doesn't matter how often or how long you are outside of Canada as long as you have a total of 1,095 days in the last five years (please note the special rules for pre-PR credit). Just make sure that when you apply you explain each "episode" in the past five years of your life.

I was in school knowing the country canada i knew i might not be able to get the course equivalent i need fir schook and i was away for a year at a time. I fully settled 2014 and i have been here since so i have gaps of absense up to 366 days. Just once though. So far you are not a PR trying to renew days that are not enough
