Do I have to file a Canadian Tax Return? When does spouse become dependent?

What? I did not understand this.

With a dependent you get a tax break/credit based on your circumstances which is then refunded to you, right?

They take the money based on an assumption of your circumstances, take it month by month, then, at the end of the year you correct their errors and they refund the difference?

I hate taxes.
No, this is for last year. They assume your money will not change this year and give you according to what they assume you will make/get etc. That's what I understand of it (And I hate taxes too!)

Oh boy lol. I'm still completely lost!

Well, at least we're getting something back, will make a little dent in the credit card bill ::)

Hi,
My Canadian fiance and I are gettting married in October, then I'm filing as soon as I can. What does that do as far as his taxes? I will be staying with him after we are married. More than likely, my PR won't be processed completely by April. What should he do? Should he mention me at all? I won't be working at all and previously in my job, I'll have made little over 10,000, well under that magic limit though.

If you were in Canada for 6 months or more (183 days) you were a resident for tax purposes.

That's what CRA told me when I called. My husband had to claim me. From what I understand from reading the CRA website though, I don't have to file myself in Canada - but definitely the USA.

You should definitely apply for a TTN (temporary tax number). I got married in Nov. and it has been a nightmare since. I have 2 children and lost my benefits for several months until my husband got a TTN and had to send them his world income for the past 3 years. If there are children involved make sure you both file a tax return even if one of you has 0 income. Otherwise you won't get the benefits you are entitled to.

Ok, I've got the paperwork and filled it out. I wasn't sure if I needed it to open my Canadian bank account ( turns out I didn't). I'll send it off. That way he can claim me.
