Yes you do. Submitting a PR application by itself doesn't extend your visitor status.

Since your visitor visa expired already you'll need to both apply to restore your status (which you may do since it's been less than 90 days since your status expired) and to extend your visa. See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/visa/validity/restoration.asp and http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp for instructions and application forms.

Alternatively, you'd have to leave and re-enter Canada to regain visitor status. Of course, you'd have to convince the Border Services Officer that you still have closer ties to NL and would go back if a decision isn't reached on your application (ie your stay is temporary). If you choose to go down this path, others have reported finding it helpful to travel with your spouse/partner and take a copy of their application to show the reason for the stay and to show you both understand that you can't work in Canada while visiting and have a plan for your visit.

Was the application inland or outland? I'm not sure, but there might be ramifications and smarter people than me might need to know that to better answer.

Inland application Sir.
Leaving the country in order to return to regain status might not be a good idea. If you are denied entry then your application is deemed abandoned and you'll have to start all over.

Did you also send an OWP application with your Sponsorship application?

If the answer is yes, then you have 'implied status' and do not need to do anything.

If the answer is no, then you will need to send in an application to restore your status as well as renew your visa as OhCanadiana stated previously.

Good luck.

Yes, you must extend your visitor again and again until you land as a permanent resident. Can I ask why you applied inland?

Just an FYI - you can apply outland even if you're applying from within Canada.

How long ago did you apply? If relatively recently and overall speed to get a decision matters, it may be faster to withdraw and reapply through NL since outland processing time is generally significantly faster than inland.

If you decide to stay with the inland application process, after you restore your status, you could submit an OWP to get a work permit while your inland application is processed.

Vriendelijke groeten =)
