Do citizens of "western" countries get study permits more easily?

Not sure about study permit but Harper made it very clear that they would like to see more European immigrants rather than Asian or Africans. This is in line with their agenda of keeping an all white majority in Canada and not having the culture and religion hijacked by coloured people

Well, the only reason I want to study at MUN is because I fell in love with a Newfie boy... I do want to switch career paths too and have considered studying CS in Finland instead (here it's free after all), but I'd rather invest the money and start a life with my boyfriend. And no, I will NOT mention his existence in my SOP. :)

There is a M.Sc. program in CS at MUN, but it requires a B.Sc. majoring in Computer Science for admission. I did have CS as my minor, but that's not enough. I have been continuing my studies, thinking that I'd get a M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering (all university degrees here have historically been Master's degrees, and the Bachelor's degree was only introduced as an intermediate degree a few years ago with the Bologna Process). But this field is just not good for me, and I'm not going to finish the M.Sc. So starting over from scratch is really my only option. Currently I'm just working. The good thing is that I will be able to get some transfer credits for the 2nd B.Sc. degree, possibly even a year's worth of courses.

I thought I'd mention all of this in my SOP, along with my experience as a teaching assistant in basic programming courses which I very much enjoyed. I probably won't mention having started the M.Sc. studies though, as dropping out certainly won't look good to the VO... As for why I want to study in Canada and especially at MUN, I'm planning to write about how I've wanted to try out living abroad for so long, and this need for a fresh start would be the perfect opportunity for it (which is all true). Also MUN is one of the cheapest universities in Canada, if not the cheapest, so that should justify my choice of school well enough.

My parents will be co-signing the bank loan, do you think I should include some kind of letter from them as well?
Well, this is the thing (I know you don't want general advice . . .) -- if you are studying for three years, 70,000 Euros is probably close to the minimum that you need. Better than a loan would be a promise of continuing support from your parents -- but since you're almost 30, CIC might not care so much about that. CIC might also wonder why, if you want to study abroad, you don't go do it in England or any other part of Europe, where you would pay low tuition fees, or none. Very few people suddenly borrow 100,000 Canadian dollars to uproot themselves to St. Johns. You've chosen a very expensive way to spend time in Newfoundland, one that is going to leave you in debt -- and the computer science job market is volatile and unpredictable. Bachelor degrees are not as valuable as they used to be. Since you are doing a masters right now, it is probably something that can be finished within a year. I'd recommend doing this highly -- then it's there, if you want to fall back on it. This is a risky way to start over, don't think of your loan as an investment; it might be, but it might also be lost money.

I mention this because I did the same thing -- changed from anthropology to public health in my 30s. The difference is that I did it with a European masters degree, which is shorter, cheaper, and modular, so I could fly to Europe and take a few courses at a time. It was still harder starting out in a new field than I thought it would be; and I had a graduate degree when I was doing so, not the basic entry degree, and no debt.

Regardless, though, good luck, sorry to natter on.

Thanks for the replies, on-hold. I'm afraid that you are correct, but I'm going forward with this anyway. We'll see if CIC will grant me the study permit or not. Continuing with the current M.Sc. is simply not an option, I'd rather hit myself with a hammer than try to act for one more second that I have a passion for physics or biomedical engineering. This career path will get me nowhere - trust me, I've been fighting with it for 7 years now... I wish I had listened to my heart at 13 years old, when I was making websites and teaching myself the very basics of programming, and thought that a computer-related field might be a good one for me. :'(
i didnt read the entire message but please dont mention about love in ur SOP that will make u a potential immigrant.
