Do Canadian authorities at the border know exactly about all your absences?

I am a permanent resident of Canada. I have lived in Canada for more than a year. I have been outside of Canada for two weeks now and need to stay for about one more month. When I return, I will have lost my ability to meet the 730 days out of five years obligation by about 30 days. My PR card is valid until 2015.

I plan to return by land. When I appear at the Canadian border, will they know as soon as they scan my PR card or my passport that I have overstayed my time outside of Canada. There is no stamp in my passport showing the most recent date I left Canada.

I heard that the Canadian and US authorities automatically share all the information on all the border crossings by anybody. Is this true?

I wonder whether they automatically have a calculation ready to show that you will not be able to meet the residency obligation and can initiate the canceling of your PR status.

Any insights and experiences will be greatly appreciated.

  • When did you become a PR?
  • If your PR expires in 2015 why the worry?
  • No, they don't automatically have a calculation ready

In November 2006.

  • I worry because I think they might know, at the time I attempt to cross, that I will not be able to meet the residency obligation (at least until November 2011 and after that I will be able to meet it.) When I applied for my PR card in late 2009, I reported all my absences up to that date, and, at that time I was going to be able to meet the residency obligation provided that I don't stay out too long. After that, I made a few very short trips by land and one by air. I don't know if they have the exact dates of those trips (they certainly have all the entry dates to Canada and the exits by air, but I don't know if they have all the exits from Canada by land). It is possible to see from my passport one absence of 8 days and two more entry dates to Canada. I worry because I think they might decide to do the calculation and I would not be able to disprove them with evidence. I don't know if could tell them I was only gone for 2 weeks (whereas it would really be about six weeks) on this most recent tip, because I don't know what information they might have in front of them, and I don't want to be found lying.

Moreover, they noted one time that I had a permanent resident status in the US, and they told me that they would be watching in the future whether I meet my residency obligation.

I don't have a full picture of your situation because I dont know your dates in and out of Canada. I would only advice that since you have been previously warned, it is better to do your calculations properly and make sure you meet your residency obligations. It is possible that they already made a note on your profile in their system.

They don't know everything 100% or instantly or people who don't meet the residency requirements would never get in unnoticed and we know that some do because they post here. You are right to worry but you might actually slip through.
