I got my spouse PR recently totally DIY. My friend wants to apply in the asylum route. She is very short with money, so she wants to know if it can be done without consultant/lawyer? Maybe I will help a little with filling the appcation, reading instruction, gethering documents, but I am not professional, and only been through my own case.

Sure, she can apply herself. Lots do.

It is definitely possible, especially with your support on the gathering documents/reading instructions/submission etc. as that is more the technical part and as you said you have successfully done it for your spouse's PR.
The things to keep in mind for that is to remember to apply for a study or work permit during the refugee application process.
For me the 'biggest' or the most emotionally taxing part is the Basis of Claim, where your friend will have to write and explain in great detail her life story and why she fears persecution from her country of nationality and on what basis she has those fears.
Good luck!
