I've read on the cic website stating that a person is eligible to sponsor if he had declared bankrupcy and is discharged from it. I would like to know.. how is it considered discharged? When a person is done with paying his monthly bankrupcy bills, or after 7 years when his record is wiped clean?thanks..

When a person has fufilled the requirements of bankruptcy. I think it's usually a year, or maybe 18 months? When you're done this their will be a court judgement saying you are discharged. You can sponsor at this point. The 7 years thing is just how long it will be on your credit report.

In Canada, in most standard cases, a bankruptcy is discharged by the trustee after about nine months. You would receive a notice of discharge (or something similar).

Thank you both so much for the info i felt so relieved now. Me and me sponsor is getting married next month and I was worried that it might not go through. His bankrupcy is two years ago so I guess he can sponsor now.

yes most first time bankruptcies are discharged after 9 months,if this is not his first time,it's a different story, that can take as long as 3 years to be discharged, and the person would even have to go to court, before a judge.

You have to send a copy of the bankruptcy discharge notice in with the application.

Your partner should have received this from the trustee's dealing with the payment distribution.

My partner is a discharged bankrupt, we sent in the notice with our application and had no problem at all.

You don't have to send the notice. You cannot sponsor if you are currently bankrupt, but if you have been discharged you do not have to send any proof at all.
