While the COVID-19 pandemic has presented a number of challenges world-wide, Canada’s approach is aimed at protecting the health of Canadians and its residents while minimizing the economic and social impact of the health and travel restrictions. Since March, the Government of Canada has restricted who may travel to Canada, including who may travel here for the purpose of beginning or continuing their studies, provided that certain criteria are met.
The current travel restrictions will remain in effect
until October 20, 2020.
On October 2, the Government of Canada announced that changes will be made to travel restrictions affecting international students who wish to travel to Canada for the purpose of beginning or continuing their studies.
Starting October 20, asymptomatic international students may travel to Canada, if meeting the following requirements:
- You must be in possession of a valid study permit or letter of introduction; and
- You must be attending a designated learning institution (DLI) with a COVID-19 readiness plan approved by the province or territory.
The list of DLIs that have COVID-19 readiness plans approved by the province or territory will be available
on October 20 on the IRCC website and updated regularly.
Until your DLI obtains an approved COVID-19 readiness plan,
you will not be able to travel to Canada. You are strongly encouraged to check IRCC’s website to confirm that your DLI has an approved COVID-19 readiness plan before you travel.
Before arriving in Canada, travellers must plan for their mandatory 14-day quarantine period which starts on the date they arrive. Government of Canada representatives will conduct health screenings at the time of entry to Canada.
As travellers to Canada, international students will also be asked if they have a suitable place to quarantine on entry where they will:
- have access to basic necessities, including water, food, medication and heat during the winter months
- won’t have contact with people who:
- are 65 years of age or older
- have underlying medical conditions
- have compromised immune systems
- won’t be in a group or community living arrangement
