All my documents are in my maiden name. The only thing that reflects married name is my banking info in Canada. My application, passport, is all in my old name. So I figure my COPR will be in my old name. I figure to make a smooth transition I should let my old name remain as is and after receiving card I do a name change with my marriage certificate. Question now tho is: should I be/ will I have to be walking around with my marriage certificate on a daily basis after landing in Canada? Anything that I am doing do I use my old name until I get a name change?

what Keesio said is correct. CIC must have proof that there is a new passport with the married name on it to issue a COPR in the married name.

For landing the COPR name must match the Passport name.

I am on the same boat as you!.. This is my plan:

1. I will land with my maiden name and bring a certified copy of my marriage certificate (with the original) to the border and ask them if they could send it in with my COPR to have my PR issued under my married name. IF they say no then at least I tried right?

Next

2. After I land I am going to go change my ON drivers license to my married name. That gives me ID in my married name. Then I will submit for a new passport so I can have a passport under my married name. Another ID under married name.

3. then change everything else under married name

4. If the officer at the border says he cannot ask for my PR to be issued in my married name then I will wait to get the new PR in my maiden name and submit for a name change. Until then I know I will have to carry my marriage certificate when I travel. You really only need your PR card to enter Canada and prove you are a PR of Canada.

My mother was a PR of the USA for many years and that PR card never left the house unless she was leaving the country.

I will also try to get my SIN issued under my married name if they say no I will have them issue it under maiden name and then change name right there.

Geez hubby's won't have this name change issue lol..... :p
@ Marcia819, I was thinking of ur option 4 as I didnt want any hiccups at my landing. I will just do it all after I get settled in. My passport from my home country does not expire until next year so I think I will wait to change that but eveyrthing else I will do after landing.

I thought about the landing and there being issues but I am just going to ask. I mean I am not doing anything wrong by asking lol... If they get nasty with me then I will just keep my mouth shut and let them do their job hahaha.... But honestly I have never had an issue with Canadian Border Officers... (knock on wood!)...

My passport doesn't expire until 2018 but I have been meaning to change it. My picture doesn't even look like me anymore. >.<

Marcia,
I dont think the Border Officers will give an issue either. Just ask is very correct.

Yes You Can! I work one of consulate office. I personally suggest you do not try to change name. If you change name every year in some of the paper you will face problem. If you are from India, if you change your name, it gives headache whole life if you change name for eg: some countries have dual citizenship. If you change name, its hard to proof in your backhome that two persons are same.I heard bad experience from my clients before.
But you can!!!!

Thank you for the advice.

I am from the USA. I will start by changing my name on my social security card. That normally thats the process and from there it is easier to prove the new name is you. Personally as long as there is a marriage certificate I have seen that is enough proof here in the USA and in Canada.

I do not want my maiden name, I have no connection to it. It is just a name and I had always said as soon as I was married I would take my husbands name.

The process seems pretty straight forward. Nothing too hard just a lot of legwork and paperwork.
