Delivering in Canada with TRV - refuse entry by boarder agent

Hi All,

I am a non-resident Canadian Citizen who is currently working on a long term overseas assignment (long story but was re-assigned due to downturn in Calgary).
My wife has a valid TRV and we basically visit Canada every summer (since 2016) to meet family and friends. We are now expecting a baby and I am really uncomfortable having the baby here. I prefer if my wife delivers our baby in Canada. My Company covers all medical expenses for me and my family in Canada (home country coverage) so I am not worried about medical costs.

My question is once we arrive in Canada will the border agent refuse her entry giving this time she is traveling for purpose of delivering in Canada? does anyone has any experience in this area?

Others can comment/correct me but not clear why you would not at least have started an outland sponsorship given assume still working for a Canadian company so that might scrape by as intent to return.

To be honest I didn't start the sponsorship process because I still don't have the intention to move back to Calgary. Basically my Canadian Company is keeping me out here until things pick up. The project I am currently on will be completed by 2021-2022.

To sponsor my wife I have to show that I have the intention to move back. Until I truly do, which should be around the end of the project, I don't want to start an application. I am targeting somewhere around 2020-2021 (assuming It takes a year to process). ​

You asked this same question back in 2017, wife is pregnant etc , what happened in that situation?

Yes I did, thanks I am aware of that. my wife ended up getting the TRV at that time. And we did not end up going to canada to deliver. We delivered here and had the worst experience. I do not want to go through it again. We did end up going several times after that for regular visits.
That's why I am reposting to see if anyone went through it again. If I knew the outcome from the first experience I wouldn't have asked again.

The short answer is that it's impossible for any of us to predict what will happen at the border since this is up to CBSA. Your wife may be allowed in - or she may be refused entry and be required to leave on the next flight available. Demonstrating that you are covered by your company's insurance policy won't guarantee entry. It's ultimately going to be a dice roll.

Just thinking to myself logically, you cannot say you're coming here fore the sole purpose of delivering a child....They will not accept that reason. INDIRECTLY, sure...but not for that sole purpose.

Do you know how many people would come here just for that.

I think if it was yourself who was pregnant they couldn't stop you from entering Canada as a citizen. But your wife doesn't have the same rights in Canada as you do as she has not applied for any permanent status in Canada. So you being a Citizen doesn't really help her if you haven't applied anything for her.

But as Scylla has already said no one can say for sure what the officer will decide.

Thanks DiiDii, appreciate it. That's a great link and clarifies alot. However, also to get further confirmation, I think will take this to the embassy along with all documents I've got and see what they advise.

Yes I agree and figured so as well. That's why I wish the rules were clearer.
