Hi everyone,
I need some advice regarding the definition of an academic for an open work permit that does not require an LMIA. I posted this question within another post below but it got a little lost in my other questions.
I'm from the UK and have an offer to work in Canada for 3 1/2 months from May 2015, along with my long-term boyfriend from the USA (we're not married but are common-law according to the definition as have lived together for ~4 years). Because the job is less than 6 months, I cannot come on a spouse permit. The employer is not willing to go down the LMIA route.
I am currently studying a PhD in the same field that the job is in which is bird ecology and conservation. I will (should!) be awarded my PhD at the end of April (position starts May). I will then no longer by a PhD student, but I will continue to write and publish work from my PhD.
Academics do not require an LMIA, and a researcher is classed as an academic. But the definition of academic is fuzzy:
w w w .cic.gc.ca/english/work/apply-who-permit.asp
Can anyone shed some light on whether I may be included in this category? I am struggling to get contact info for advice.
Thanks!
Emma
