Hey all,

My wife comes next week from India filling out B4 form, called CBSA, they said for gold to have pics of the gold and an appraisal for it. We have gold around 6-7K cdn worth.

Is the appraisal really necessary?? We were planning on declaring and having pics with B4 form. Could I just put approx value of the gold with pics or appraisal is best??

It's not necessary if you bring it into Canada without being detected by the border officers.

I was told by border control that its not necessary to have an appraisal for items that are valued less than CAD$2000. So, if you have lots of gold items but the value of each item is less than $2,000 you probably don't need a formal appraisal. Where this can be a problem is if a border control officer looks at the gold and believes it could be worth $2,000 or more. So, it would be wise to get appraisals on everything worth $2,000 or more and on everything that looks expensive.

I found an appraiser (in Portland, Oregon) who gave me a written appraisal with photo for $35 for each piece of jewelry. With the value of gold up, I was surprised at the value my jewelry has. CBSA reviewed the appraisals without comment, and it was useful having the appraisals for insurance purposes. So my vote is to get a written appraisal with photos.
