Hi everyone,
I am very glad that I found this thread. I am in very similar situation.
I am a Canadian permanent residence cardholder and I also have a J1 visa in the US which will expire in two weeks. Due to the pandemic, I am mostly in Canada and work remotely now. I will apply for a new J1 visa next week, and once I get it, my company would ask me to relocate to the US. But my whole family lives in Canada, so I would like to commute to the US on a daily basis, luckily I live very close to the border and my company allows me to work remotely as long as the location is in the US.
However, the immigration officer in my company told me that they have to go to the US Department of the state system and modify my status daily, which they do not have the staff to do so. I read that many people actually do this type of commute every day, so I am wondering if I can only do that (without bothering my immigration officer at the company) on an H1B visa? Let's just ignore the COVID situation for simplicity.
