I landed as a single FSW immigrant in Nov 2011.
Did not take any major items(only had my clothes etc) and did not give the customs any list of "goods to follow".
I returned to India after receiving my PR card in early 2012.
I have been in India since then.

My q;

I am planning to go back to canada now permanently.

In my situation, what are items on which I will have to pay customs duty?
Or can I still be exempt as a returning PR?

thanks

not for this time(unless u have filled B4A form).Your personal exemption amount would be $800 (if u r returning after 48 hours) it may include alcohol and tobacco products, within the prescribed limits set by provincial or territorial authorities. Goods must be in your possession at time of entry to Canada. Residents/Travelers absent for periods of 48 hours or more will have the applicable exemption level credited against the total value of goods.

You already lived in Canada for few months. By that time you might have got a good idea about the household stuff available in Canadian markets for settlement. Many Indian items are available in Walmart and also in Target ( opening shortly ). Therefore, you need to take only what is essential for you and expensive in Canada

As you are from India you can carry with you Checked baggage
23 x 2 = 46 kg + 8 to 10 Kg hand bag ( according to the airline )
Additional hand carry - A lap top plus Camera and cell phone in a bag.

What else you need to carry other than your essential basic requirements ?. Carry what ever you can accommodate in the 54 to 56 kg accompanied baggage. Decide wisely and eliminate un-important or un- necessary items. You don't need to pay any single dollar for that what you carry.

Thanks Karwa sach and Wilson both for your replies.

Wilson,
I later looked at CIC website also, and from what I understood, I will be exempted for $ 800 of total value of goods.

1. I wish to take some Indian artwork, ( paintings, handicraft newly bought from cottage emporium) for my new home
in canada . Rest will be my essential basics (clothes etc. + old books). If the value of the artwork is less than $ 800 equivalent
in Indian Rupees, I won't have to pay any duty , right?

2. If I take some old decoration pieces/paintings from my home in India, will their value be assessed for duty?

That is always a good idea to take some art work. What you should do is if possible get the original invoice with a lesser price. Anyhow, once it is converted to CAD it is not much. I don't think you have to pay any duty for the items what you mentioned being you are still eligible for the exemption.
