Early in the year, I had faith in the new citizenship process that I'd become a citizen a lot quicker than the previous citizenship process. Unfortunately, I have yet to receive an invitation to appear for my citizenship test and interview since applying back on the 7th of January. However, I am speculating that the invitation will arrive very soon (before the end of 2015 or early Jan 2016, but again, its just a speculation. So here is my problem.

I have an important trip outside of Canada around the end of January, and to be able to make the trip, I need to have a passport which is valid for more than 6 months. My current passport expires on the 27th of April, 2016. So as of the 28th of October, 2015, my passport is no longer valid for travel to that destination. This means I have to send in my current passport for renewal, and the renewal process my take more than 2 months (all of November, December, and probably the first week or two from January). There is a big possibility that this period where my passport will be at the embassy will coincide with my test and interview date. Therefore, I will not have my most recent passport with me to present to the CO during the interview.

My embassy does not provide any proof of receipt when they get my current passport in any shape or form (3rd world problems). The only thing I will have is the postal receipt from the package i'll be sending the embassy, which really doesn't prove anything.

What do you think are my options? The only two options that are out of question for me are the following:

1. Postponing the test and interview until I get my new + old passport back.
2. Not making the trip and holding on to my current passport.

I would not be in this pickle had it not been for this ridiculous and unexplainable delay in processing my citizenship application, I was very hopeful that I would become a citizen around mid-2015 to avoid this whole scenario. Has anyone been in a similar situation and still went to the interview? How did the CO deal with it? What was the outcome?

Thank you so much for your advice

Make a colour photocopy of each page of your current passport. Explain to them that you don't have your current passport because you've submitted it for renewal. Provide the colour photocopies as a substitute.

Notarizing the copies may be something you want to consider if you're concerned that CIC will not except regular copies.

- As another member suggested you can take photocopies and notarize it before you apply for the renewal. When you apply for renewal there must be an application for renewal. Take a copy of the filled & signed application. also take a copy of the payment receipt for the renewal service.

- On your test day you can explain it to the CO and they sure will have seen such cases and let you know how you can show them the document.

- worst come worst you may ask the test to be rescheduled. You have waited this long waiting another couple a months should not be a problem.

Your suggestions are great!! I already made colored copies of each page in the passport and have notarized each page. This is what I can bring with me as proof:

1. Colored and notarized copy of the passport
2. Copy the passport renewal application (Most of it is in Arabic, do you think I should Translate it?)
3. Receipts of the money order from my bank to pay the renewal fee.
4. Mail receipt from Canada Post

Other than the above, I don't think there's anything else I can present. Do you think the above would be satisfactory to the CO? Have any of you (or a member from this forum that you read about) solved such a problem this way?

2. Get it translated your renewal application and also any page/stamp in passport not in english

That's a good list!!!!

Get the form translated, so the language is not the issue during the interview. Weather it will be satisfactory for the CO to accept or not is very dependent upon the CO and their mood. I believe you should be ok, if you presented all of the above and explained your situation well.
