Hi,
My question is about the canada immigration visa. In the section of Current country of residence, there is a field asking for current immigration status. I am not sure about my current immigration status. I was on F1 visa for the past two years, and just got my H1b visa. I am planning to go to canada for H1b stamping. All online sources mention that my status has been changed from F1 to H1b automatically on October 1st(that this happens for all F1 applicants residing in the US. Thus in this visitor visa form for canada visa, what should I mention as my current immigration status and its dates?
1. Should it be H1b starting from 1st October 2016 to its expiry period?
2. Or should it be F1 status starting from when I first entered the United states to my OPT expiry date?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

If you've had your status changed, then you should list the most recent one in the form. In your case, I assume it would be H1B from October 1 as long as you've got your approval notice, which you will need to attach as supporting evidence.

In a separate file that you could upload as letter of explanation or additional documents, mention your previous status in the US (F1, OPT, etc.) and attach proof to support that. That will show that you have remained in legal status throughout your stay here.

I was on a J1, F1, OPT, and then H1B when I applied and made sure to provide all documents that showed that (stamped J1, F1, H1b visas, I-20, college degree, OPT card, etc.).
