Hi, I got my passport back from the immigration office in LA last Thursday. I am planning to re-enter Canada to get my passport stamped by crossing the border in Sweetgrass,MT next week. My work permit expired last May but I have applied for a restoration of status just last Friday after I found out that my employer did not renew it. Would I have a problem with the immigration officers when I re-enter? I called the cic helpline as soon as I found out about it (Thursday) and the lady I spoke with said that my status here is illegal. Would it be possible that I become inadmissible because I did not update my status sooner?

Thank you!

Hi dawn,

If you dont have a legal status then you may be denied entry in Canada.

But the good news is that you have applied for RESTORATION OF STATUS as soon as you came to know of the lapse. Did you apply within 90 days of losing your previous legal status?

When you decide to Flagpole, have all the documents with you....your previous WP, your application for Restoration and the tracking information of your Restoration of status package. Hopefully, when you meet the VO at the border, your application might have been entered into the system; if not then the Tracking information is the only way to convince the VO that you had applied for Restoration status.

You will get a refund of your Restoration fees once you become PR.

Thanks, Mitali!

I applied for my restoration 34 days after my work permit expired. I did it online so Im hoping there wont be any problem when the immigration officer try to check it on their system.

Thanks again, and Wish me luck! :)

BTW, when I asked the cic phone agent about this they could not give me an answer because they said they are not immigration officers, so I called the Canada Border Services Agency (thru the Border Information Service) but they could not answer my question either, and got rude when I told him I already phoned the immigration helpline. He said they should know because they work at the immigration.
