Hello, my husband and I are Australian, currently traveling in the US on a multiple entry tourist visa. We are heading to Canada shortly but would like to stay for more than 12 months. Is is possible to cross the US border to get stamped for another 6 months in Canada? I know we can apply for an extension for an additional 6 months on top of the original 6 months, but we would like to stay for approximately 13-14 months in total. Is it possible to apply for an extension on an already extended tourist visa?

Try to get an extension while you are inside Canada. You can apply for 1 year if you have a good reason. If you jump around the border to get an extension beware: If you get rejected at one border checkpoint and try another one, you may get banned for a while for trying to cheat the system ..

It would be safer to try to get an extension from within Canada. You just need to show good reason for your stay, and proof that you can support yourselves financially. It costs $75 per person, but it's better than possibly being rejected at the border for flagpoling.
