I'm going to visit relatives in Toronto this summer. I was invited to a friend's wedding in Michigan and would like to know if I can rent a car and cross the U.S. border with my Italian passport. Does anybody here have a clue?

You don't need a visa to enter the US, but you will need an ESTA ($14). It's best to get one online in advance, which takes just a few minutes:
https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

Crossing the border with a rental depends on the rental company you choose. Obviously you should check when booking the car, that you're able to do so. Hertz are reportedly OK with it:

I have a similar situation. I have PR with Pakistani passport. Do they issue me B-2 visa on the US border, or should I get it from the Consulate in Toronto before I go to US?

Thanks for reply.

If you have an expired B2 visa in your passport, you may visit Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean for max 30 days and return. Google "automatic revalidation of US temporary visa"
