I don't have my PR or a SIN number, but they allowed me to be added onto my husband's bank account. This was TD bank.

Giggles, it seems to be generally the same. Pay off your credit cards every month, pay on time, etc.

You can get a mastercard for $500 with Capital One MC (sorry I think i said cost capital before, i meant capital one) with no PR or SIn card, my husband did it when he was in canada and he didnt have either

I got a credit card 5 yrs ago with just my study permit and passport. I have a real good score which almost got messed up after I gave birth due to the fact that my OHIP coverage didn't kick in yet. I worked out a payment plan with the hospital to avoid being sent to collections. I'm still paying the bill which was so huge because of a c-section. I preserved my credit though. I got unsecured visas from both TD and RBC as well as a line of credit which sure is handy.

how much was the bill?

$7000+ it would have been more if I didn't have it subsidized by an organization that works with temporary residents without OHIP. Twice that actually.

Wow. Well i wish you the best of luck paying it off!

hubby is with TD so won't be going there...we agreed to keep separate accounts. So either Royal or Scotia. And i am pulling towards Scotia.

thanks everyone for the replies

can you apply for one with without being sponsored fully?

yes! he was here on a tourist visa when my hubby got his!

TD is easiest for us (I'm already there) and they have a lot of things for those new to Canada.... They also have TD Bank in the United States which makes things a little more convenient (he's American)

I recommend the canadian tire credit card ( Its mastercard) my husband has only had it 6 months and he now has credit limit on it of 1000..try that out for new PR holders

Banks will use your US credit score to get you a mortgage though.
