Hi

I noticed that quite a few people contact their MPs (if i understand correctly we are talking about Member of Parliament here)

How does that help and/or should I contact one?

Regards and thanks for answers.

YES .....MP - Member of Parliament

Find your MP in canada - link below

http://www.parl.gc.ca/Parlinfo/Compilations/HouseOfCommons/MemberByPostalCode.aspx?Menu=HOC

Go to this link type in your postal code.

Once u find your MP u can call them and book an appointment to meet her/him or do it on the phone itself....they will guide u with the process and what forms u have to fill and sign

MP can never speed up the application process but definitely give u some information abt your file within a week.......unless u have a lazy MP and he tells u to come back only after u have crossed the processing time limit...some MP's are better than others but dont expect any miracles...and go to MP only IF YOU NEED TO !!

hope this helps :)

good luck

It can sometimes help where a person has been waiting way beyond the stated processing times and hasn't been able to find out why, or where there are other issues that are not being resolved in the processing.

You application has only been in for a very short time. You are at the start of the process so I don't imagine you have run into problems with CIC that you need to ask a third party to help you resolve. Contacting the office of a member of parliament is really the last resort.

Just to add to the other posts, Not all MP's will help. Mine refused to, and now my cousin is going through family sponsorship as well, and he is refusing to help her as well even though her husband has been denied already and no one will tell them why, including the MP.

Wow that is ridiculous, I decided to not even bother about that yet, but omg, I feel her pain, did you try contacting higher instances?

That is really awful when MPs abuse power in their own interests...

They should get his GCMS notes. The reason is in the file and they will find out this way.

It's NOT abusing power. A member of parliament is elected to represent their constituents in parliament. That is their job. Some have both the time and willingness to assist constituents in other matters, some are too busy doing their jobs to be able to take on work that isn't actually part of their duties anyway. MP's usually try to help where they can - after all, votes and goodwill are important to them. However, with CIC remember that when people go to an MP for help its asking that MP to interfere in the business of a government department. If they are willing and able, that is great. If they don't wish to be involved, for whatever reason, that is their right and has nothing to do with abuse of power.

I emailed my MP and the office responded right away. They were very understanding and willing to help. They will contact CIC in your behalf. I was told they would give me an update as soon as they heard back from CIC.
They contacted CIC yesterday. Hopefully, they will respond quickly.
It's in your MP best interest to help you, you are potential votes for him/her.

I was wondering if only Canadian citizens can contact an MP, seeing that permanent residents obviously cannot vote. Can anyone chime in on this?

Anyone in Canada can contact an MP, regardless of immigration status.
