Confusion about digital photos

Hello,

So as per CIC requirement photos should be 35mmx45mm and I also read somewhere that the digital photos should be at least 420x540 pixel resolution. But since we are uploading digital photos, why is the physical photo size mentioned? Or do we have to mail them a physical photo some time later in the application process?

Ensure that you meet the digital dimensions when submitting the photo for eAPR. No, you need not send any physical photo to CIC. After you get PPR, you need to send physical copies of photographs (50mm x 70mm) to local visa office.

Ok. But then what is that 35mmx45mm requirement for? I mean I can just meet the digital dimension (420x540) requirement. Thats what the confusion is about.

Generally, when you go to a photographer you need to tell them the photo dimensions. So people get the photo clicked (which meets 35mm x 45mm) and submit the soft copy of the photo which would meet the below requirement.

The photograph must show a full front view of the head and tops of shoulders. The size of the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31mm and 36mm. The physical dimensions in pixels must be at least 420 x 540. The final size of the image should not be less than 60KB. The file should be submitted in JPEG format.

As long as you can meet the above requirement (assume that if CIC gets your photo printed, they won't), the physical dimensions does not matter.

Is it a problem to scan a passport photo that we already have and set the required dimensions?

Passport photo won't have the same dimensions as a visa photo. Also since its smaller, the eventual scanned photo might look blurry if you try to blow up its resolution.

No, it wont be a problem as long as you can get a clear photo in the required digital dimensions and specifications.

Digital photo falls under the category of other documents. As per CIC, applications will not be rejected as “incomplete” if the documents listed under other documents are not provided to the proper specification (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/perm/express/intake-complete.asp).
