I am confused on when to get the Medical examination done for PR. I had read on the forum that it's advisable to not submit the medical examination until CIC asks, since it's only vaild for 12 months.

However, when I read online in guide 3900 under what sponsors are required to do, it states "undergo a medical examination prior to submitting the application (results are valid for 12 months)".

Please advise when to undergo a medical examination, when is it required for PR application.

Thank you

The applicant is supposed to get the medical exam before the application is sent in, and include proof of it with the application. This is for outland applicants. For inland applicants, they can wait until later in the process.

Some outland applicants also wait, but you risk CIC sending the application back because it is not complete. In addition, if you wait for them to request it, this delays processing.

I have a follow up question I hope you guys might be able to answer.

I am planning to sponsor my American wife for PR soon. She will be here for a few weeks soon and I have scheduled her an appointment for her medical examination since it is so much cheaper here. On the website the clinic states that we should bring our application file number with us. It seems that they can submit the result directly to immigration department. I have not, however, started the application and so I do not have a file number. What do I do in this situation? Can I just get the medical and submit it myself with my documentation? Should I just start the application now?

We should be able to get the application finished quickly. We have been organizing the proof of our relationship for sometime now. She just got her FBI criminal background check and with the upcoming medical we should be ready to submit soon.

thanks for your help!

I have the same question! I actually got through to the CIC telephone agent the other day, and she hesitatingly advised that we could still do the medical in advance of PR paperwork being sent to the CIC, and that when the CIC received the medical report, they would just "hold it" until the PR app came in. As I said, she didn't sound confident in this response, and it certainly doesn't seem to be an organized and effective way of doing things. One would think that they need some kind of reference number to match it to the PR application package . . . but what do you do when you don't have one?

Were you able to create EE profile already? If you have been given ITA then that should be the safest time to fo the medical exam since you will be asked to upload the UPFRONT e-medical record given to you by the clinic. If you have not been given ITA yet, an upfront medical is not advisable.

Can't we just get the medical and submit it when we submit the application? Why does it have to come directly form the physician?

You don't need UCI number to get an upfront medical. Make sure that you clarify to the receptionist and the doctor that you are doing an upfront medical. If you don't have UCI yet, you don't need one. I got my medical done in Canada without any issues. You do need to do a medical for an outland application.

Be careful when listening to the CIC call center. They are often very wrong and not well informed.

When doing an upfront medical, you will get a sheet of paper with your picture and information on it with a barcode at the top. You submit this with your application so the CIC can find your medical results, which are sent by the doctor and lab.

Thanks for the info. I want to get the medical done as it is the last step in our process. Since she will be here and it's like $200 cdn to have it done here vs $400+ USD if done in the US I figured we might as well just get it out of the way.

Yeah, I had the same choice. There was only one panel physician in my state in the US and she was booked for about 3 months and it would've cost $400 USD. I ended up getting mine done in Vancouver, BC two weeks after calling to schedule for about $220 CAD. It's definitely worth it to do it in Canada if you're able to. Just make sure they know it's an upfront medical for an outland application. Also, if the physicial is part of the eMedical system (which is likely) they will take your picture there at the office. If they aren't, they will request that you bring some PR photos. They will tell you this when you call to schedule.

See when you just create an Express Entry profile, MYCIC does not ask you for any medical result yet. Once you are given ITA, then that is the time where you need to upload documents including your upfront medical exam. In our case, we did upfront medical exam after we got ITA because we called the clinic and told them that we wanted to do an upfront medical but they do not do it without the letter from CIC, which indicates that you have been invited to apply for PR. Not unless you want to apply for work/student, or any other category, thus they won't be needing any paper from CIC. I have no idea with other clinics, but we did our medical exam in Vancouver as well.
With regards to your question if it should come from the physician, YES IT SHOULD. Only the listed physicians on the CIC website are accredited to do the medical exam. Once you go to their clinic, and finish the medical exam then you will be given an E-Medical form (UPFRONT EXAM) with your picture and your result # for CIC to be able to track your result, then that form will be the one uploaded on your MYCIC profile for the medical exam slot.
