I am getting married in Nov and applying for sponsorship of my husband right after the wedding. He is currently visiting Canada from visa exempt country and his stay expires Jan 9, 2013. We are going to apply outland (with him staying here in Canada hopefully on an extension) as it appears to be quicker. Questions

1. Should he get a medical now and send in with application? I read on some sites not to send in but to wait until asked by CIC to do so. Which is it. Same with security check i.e. when to ask for it from his country?

2. He is going to ask for an extension - what do you put in the letter?

3. Marriage certificate - apparently takes 8 weeks to get registered and then you can apply for it after it is registered. Is there anyway to hurry that process along so one can apply for sponsorship before his stay in Canada is up? I assume you need to send marriage certificate in with request for extension.

1. Yes, medicals must be submitted WITH the application for family class sponsorships. Same for security clearances.

2. All supporting documents they ask for, plus proof you have the PR application either sent (receipt, airwaybill) or in process (sponsor approval letter).

3. I don't know that you necessarily need the marriage certificate itself for the extension. For the application, yes, for an extension, maybe/maybe not. Your marriage registration form might suffice for the extension, perhaps someone else will chime in on that.

When applying for extension ( married and waiting for marriage certificate in order to apply for sponsorship and PR) how long can you ask for?

I don't know that there's a maximum. The average visitor is given 6 months, so you could probably ask for that as a minimum. Some persons have been given a year when they asked for 6 months, it's really up to the officer's discretion based on what you present.

I was in a similar situation, got married and then had to submit a request to change my status from working to visitor. I only submitted the marriage registration form. I asked for one year, but I got 6 months. I also included a letter from my husband, stating that he will sponsor me and support me financially for the time I'm in Canada, along with some of his pay stubs. (Since you're not allowed to work as a visitor, it's important that you show them that you're financially able to stay in Canada for a while.)

I would advise you to apply for your marriage certificate right away, sometimes it doesn't take so long for them to register it and if they already have your application at that point, they will get the certificate ready to send it to you right away. I think ours took about 3 weeks, I was very surprised because I expected to wait a lot longer for it.
