We mailed our application form with the Open Work permit application around January 22nd 2022. We just received an email today, March 7th and received a temporary application number.

A little backstory, my wife(PA) came to Canada as a student. After her studies, she went to work on the company I work in. We got married June last year. Her Post Graduate work permit will expire May of this year. We are looking to get an OWP so she can work while waiting for the PR. We have heard stories that the PR has been approved but the Work permit was not processed yet and they just refund them the fee.

This does not work for us as we just found out that we are expecting our first child together. Now health coverage is also needed as she is having a delicate pregnancy. I am now considering to get a TRV so she can stay here but how about health insurance as OHIP will expire at the end of May. Does private insurance pay for such things? For check ups as well as delivery? The wait is killing us and is not helping with the situation of my wife. We are avoiding for her to leave the country as this will mean that our child will have to be sponsored as well as well as we want to be together when she gives birth.

Worst case scenario, if she had to go back home, will our child be a Canadian Citizen because of me? I am a naturalized citizen since 2012. Also, will it cause any complications as my application was inland?

The anxiety is brutal especially for my wife as we are having a delicate pregnancy.

In BC, if PR application is in process under spousal case, then BC health care covered the spouse without open work permit
I am not sure about Ontario health care system, but you can contact your appropirate health authority…

If you are canadian citizen, your child will be canadian citizen, does not matter he or she born in Canada or outside Canada..
But definitely contact your Ontarion health authority, ask them your wife Pr in in process and you already got application number from IRCC
I hope this will help!

Insurance will not cover routine appointments and delivery. Due to Covid people are getting OHIP covered while on implied status but that could change at any time.

the terminologies are confusing us. I thought implied status is when we get at least the acknowledgement of receipt on the application. Also, what are the complications if she does go back to a country that do not allow dual citizenship? Will I have to sponsor the baby as well? What complications will it do to her own application? I know she at least need a medical but I read that they hold off the x-ray until we have the baby.

Canada recongize dual citizenship. So your child will get his/her Canadian citizenship. It's the other country that may have issue. Look up what others do who have children born in your home country.
