Confused about Residence Calculator.

With these new upcoming changes to the Law I thought I would still have a chance to apply before the new residency requirements become effective.

I did my calculations and got these results:

Arrival Date: 2010-01-10
Permanent residence date: 2014-03-13
Application date: 2015-03-13
Basic residence (days): 913

What I don't get is why it is going to be only 913 on March 13, 2015?

I did my calculations and its what I got:

Days spent in Canada before becoming PR: 2014-03-13 - 2010-01-10 = 1523/2 = 761
Days I will have spent by March 13, 2015 = 761 + 366 = 1127

What am I missing?

You can only go back 4 years from the application date (requirement is must be in Canada 3 years out of last 4 years). So:

Days spent in Canada before becoming PR: 2014-03-13 - 2011-03-13 = 1095/2 = 547.5
Days I will have spent by March 13, 2015 = 547.5 + 366 = 913.5

What you're missing is that you're including a window of over 5 years. IF you re planning to apply on March 13, 2015 then you can only count time spent in Canada within the 4 years(NOT 5) prior to that date. so the residency calculator will only count time since March 2011.
Also you need to be a PERMANENT RESIDENT for 2 years before you can apply. Unfortunately you can't apply before March 2016 according to the current law not the one still to be in force in the future.

Right. That is why it is absolutely impossible to reach 1095 days in a four year window unless at least 2 of those four years are spent as a permanent resident.

yeah... unfortunately.

Where you get really screwed is the fact that they won't count your time before you became a PR at all. Up until now they counted it at 0.5. That is my main issue with the bill. They should still carry some weight for the time you spent here as a tax paying resident before becoming an official PR. To completely do away with that is unfair.

Two reasons:
1. If you plan to apply in march,2015, you can only account from 2011, not 2010.

2, Only a maximum of one year time will be granted as valid to calculator time before one becomes PR.Say, one had stayed in Canada for 10 years as temp worker/student/... before he becomes PR, he still need to wait another 2 years before he can be feasible to apply for citizenship.Bcoz he will be considered STILL just only ONE year stay in Canada on the day he became PR. In your case, you have to wait until March 13,2016 to be considered as have been in Canada for 3 years.(if the c24 would still not be effective then).

Not counting vacation time you may take in the next 4 years.

I travelled for 3 weeks in December 2013 - Not sure if i will be able to apply by July 2015.

Assuming that you made no other travel outside Canada other than those 3 weeks (21 days), the earliest I can calculate for your to be able to apply is August 1st, 2015

Days spent in Canada before becoming PR: 2013-06-20 - 2011-07-31 = 690/2 = 345
Days I will have spent by July 31, 2015 = 345 + 771 - 21 = 1095

You can sign and mail your application on the next day (August 1st).

Of course you can use the online calculator to confirm it all.
