I am applying to renew my PR card and one of the checklist items online says that for online applications, you must submit a "photo of destroyed PR Card". So I break the PR card in half and then take the photo?
Second question is "proof of residency" document. I have been out for 676 days in 5 years. Presence is 1150 days. What documents do I attach? Or is the passport's entire scan sufficient since I meet the residency obligation?

I would rather apply on paper than destroy the existing PR card. The expiring PR card has its uses. Not only for own record, it could also show your identity when going through a land border while you are waiting for your new card.

Btw, if you really want to destroy it - you can create a jigsaw puzzle out of it.

From the current version of IMM 5644 (version e):

Application for a Permanent Resident Card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (IMM 5444), fully completed and signed. Note: if you are applying online, you will complete this form digitally through the Permanent Resident (PR) Portal.

Proof of residency requirements if you were outside of Canada for 1095 days or more in the past five (5) years. Please refer to Appendix A of the instruction guide for a list of the documents required.

(You do not need to include anything from Appendix A.)

---

Your PR card
If you are applying to renew your PR card, provide a copy of your current card.

If you are applying to replace your PR card, provide:

● Paper application: Your original physical PR card.

Online application: A photo of your destroyed PR card.

Since you are renewing your card, you do NOT destroy your current card. Even if it's no longer valid.

Thank you Ponga, steaky. I will continue with the online application itself. Thank you very much. Love this community.

Hi @raven00090 I am facing the same situation. Did you send a photo of destroyed PR Card in the end?
As posted above:

If you are applying to renew your PR card, provide a copy of your current card.

If you are applying to replace your PR card, provide:

● Paper application: Your original physical PR card.

Online application: A photo of your destroyed PR card.

Do the parts in Red apply to you? If not, do NOT destroy and photograph your existing PR Card!

1. you DO need to provide two pieces of proof of residency since about 2 months ago
2. It would appear that when you applying online they ask you to provide a picture of your destroyed card even if you are renewing it

I know it says that the card is to be destroyed when applying online but I want to hear from applicants, it is just so bizarre that would prefer to hear from others' experiences.

Not sure if you understood the reply. You do not have to destroy the card if you are applying for renewal. Only if you are trying to replace a valid card which is very rare, then you need to upload the destroyed card copy.

Actually it says " If you’re applying to renew your PR card, provide a photo of your destroyed PR card." Screenshot attached, taken from https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/apply-online-pr-card.html

I called IRCC about that and was actually able to talk to someone. It seemed like the person I talked to wasn’t really sure with destroying the card or not and was just told to follow the instructions for online if online submission and instructions for paper if paper submission because sometimes there are difference.

This is absurd. There is absolutely NO valid reason for a PR to destroy their current card UNTIL they receive their renewed card.

If a person applies to renew their card MONTHS before it even expires, why should they need to destroy a perfectly valid card...and then be trapped in Canada until the renewed card arrives?!

Agreed. I think it’s a mistake on the website cause it makes no sense.
