This is a fairly straight forward question. My wife landed on April 27th. When is she eligible for Ohip?

Does she have to be in Ontario for 153 day? Or can she get OHIP after 3 months?

She is eligible on July 27.

In the first 6 months she can't leave Ontario for more than 30 days, else her OHIP could be cancelled and any medical expenses OHIP paid for during that time could be asked to pay back.

Also she can't leave for more than 1 month during the first 6 months snd she also has to be in Ontario for over 6 months this year.

She can and should apply right away, and OHIP will be effective 3 months actually after her Approval in Principle Letter. So check with the Service Canada office as they have to take the date of the AIP letter. If you check OHIP website it states that you can apply with this letter.

We are going home to get her car June 2-5 and North Carolina for 10 days I’m august. No where near 30 days absent.

So on July 27 when she has OHIP she can get a family doctor?

Yes. She needs to go in and sign up with OHIP so not automatic but as long as she signs up with proof of her landing date she should get coverage on that date. Her first day of coverage will be clearly indicated on her form. She will have to find a family doctor accepting new patient and see what that office wants new patients to do. Often there is a new patient appointment.

I just checked the OHIP website. To apply for OHIP, we need proof of residency in Ontario. But for newly landed immigrant with only temporary living arrangement, what can we provide for proof of residency? for example, would a 2-week lease/rental agreement work?

Thanks!

It would be better to apply when you have more longterm accommodations figured out during those initial 3 months.
I see. I always thought the first thing I should apply after landing is OHIP. Now I think I have mistaken SIN with OHIP:p...........

Yes you can apply anytime during the first 3 months but your start date will depend on your landing date. Best to wait for a more permanent address or you will need to get a new card right away but you can get a SIN.

Hi there, my answer is based on an Inland application, in which you get an Approval In Principle letter -AIP- which is enough to start processing your OHIP card. It's a letter by email -or mail- which states that you're eligible for Permanent Residency, you get this before the Decission Made leter, and before Landing Interview letter. The key thing about this is that regardless of when you apply for OHIP, they take the date of your AIP letter which is convenient because then the 3 months wait time have already started. Even if you apply a bit after this letter, they should take that date as the start. But not sure if with Outland apps is the same. Double check it.

And true, you need proof of address mainly in an ID like a driver's license.
YiYou can always call Service Canada, they answer fairly quickly and they have all this info.

Good luck !
