Hi all,
I am currently planning on applying for a Canadian study permit. I have already been accepted into a learning institution in Canada, and am waiting for the official letter of acceptance before proceeding with my study permit application. I have already filled in any and all relevant forms required for a study permit application, as well as undergone an upfront medical examination.

However, I was planning on adding pages to my US passport before traveling to Canada, when I found out that the US no longer allows for addition of pages to a passport. In fact, to get new pages, I will have to renew my passport, which is essential as I am about to run out of pages in my passport.

My issue at hand is that I have already done the upfront medical examination, and my current passport number is printed on the medical certificate proving that I have undergone the medical examination. If I renew my passport, I will get a new passport and number, which would not tally with the passport number on my medical certificate. I can wait to submit the application form until after I get the new passport, but I am unsure of whether I can still use the medical certificate as it would then not match the passport number written in the application file.

On the other hand, I can submit the application now with my current passport number and then renew the passport, then bring along the canceled passport to the border and explain to them when I go to obtain the study permit. I am not sure what to do at the moment. The most crucial part of the problem is the medical examination certificate — will it still be valid and applicable to my study permit application if I renew my passport?

Thank you very much for your help!

The thing is doing a medical examination can delay the study permit application, by up to 4 weeks. The earliest I can renew my passport is next month in June, and I should get it back by mid-June. If I redo the medical exam, I would have to wait for the 4 weeks again, which I already did by taking the upfront medical examination. My course starts in September, and as such I cannot afford to retake the medical exam as it would delay the application by too long. Also, I just did the examination a week ago — not too keen to do it again...

Hi
Both options seem ok. All you have to do is to show both the new and the old passports when you get to the border. I think they do understand. When I applied for my study permit I used my old passport but I renewed the passport before they issued me the study permit and TRV and I was fine. Just my opinion. If you feel very much concerned, you could write to CBSA, they usually respond on time. I wish you well
