Yes, all points noted & appreciated.
However, & this is going into various Philosophical realms ... it's the Western & North American societies which are more forgiving & inclusive...than the East Indian culture which I was born into ...in MY particular situation which I might emphasize... ie a single male, age 58. It is easier for me to socialize with others, in a similar or slightly different situation as me , in Vancouver as compared to even metropolitan cities of India... where I would be viewed with suspicion or " something's Wrong with you" ...still single all these years & increasingly so as I get older & older. So then ...each culture has its merits & demerits...based on who is able to conform or not ...so my maintaining my PR is quite essential...in My Particular situation
It's actually not northern European/protestant, but more like Greco-Roman thing, from principles of civil rights to egalitarianism and humane approach. Our own constitution and bill of rights in the US was written by men heavily influenced by Greco-Roman traditions and hostile to ways of puritan church.

But I get your point, and want to clarify that in no way I was trying to portray things as black-and-white, nor did I imply by criticizing protestant ways that others are without blame and blemish. Things in life are rarely black-and-white, and very often fall into grey spectrum. And, if I was to criticize things associated with Asian continent, authoritarianism or excessive respect and regard for authority figures and hierarchy would come to mind. Ostracism for non-conformity which you describe were also typically more prevalent in societies with authoritarian form of government , in societies that had high regard for upper social casts, regardless of merit. However, lately I observe similar tendencies in the Western world which is slowly becoming what Orwell warned about in "1984". So, the only things that made it worth living in the West are quickly evaporating into thin air, with less of freedoms and rights left for ordinary citizens, and more aspects of life controlled and decided by brute forces that hold true power and influence over our lives.
