You can tell the IO that you will let them know of your address when you have one. They can give you a form you can fax or mail to them when you have an address. You can then arrange a PO box, for example at UPS or even Canada post and ask that your mail to be forwarded to the address of your choice where you actually live. You give the PO box to immigration as your address.

Even I have landed but did not get PR card because the IO did not accept my friend's address at that time
Is it correct that if I apply for PR card after 6 months of landing I need to go to Canada and collect in person
Also would it work if I update my address in e-CAS and call the IO that I have updated my address

I have heard that if you fail to provide an address within 6 months that they will treat your first PR card more like a renewal application in the sense that you will have to fill out an application and pay and so I think it likely that they will also send you a notification to pick the card up as they do with renewals rather than mail it to you as they do with the first PR card.

If you update your address using e-CAS and then call them to say that you have updated, the question is will they see in e-CAS that you updated from outside Canada and how will you phone them from outside Canada as the call centre number only works from within? If you are outside Canada at the moment, the same applies as when you landed and they would not accept your friends address and that is that you will not be at this address when the PR card arrives.

Something you could do would be to write them a letter with your address but mail it in a different envelope to your friends and have them mail it from within Canada. I suppose you would use the address found here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5445E7.asp

You could also just wait until you are ready to move to Canada and at that point, apply for a PR travel document to go back and when you arrive to stay, apply for your PR card then.

Leon,

Thank you very much for your reply. So should I write in the letter that I am at this address in canada and request mail the PR card at that address?

Re: Completed landing but did not get PR card - Leon please help

Leon

I had a concern. If I write a letter informing the IO that I now have a canadian address and get it mailed by my friend from Canada, do I need to also submit PR Card Application form (IMM 5444E) along with the letter. Please advise. Thanks.

Leon, I just want to ask. Since the person is actually outside Canada, wouldn't lying that he is inside get him in trouble? I am sure, when he exited the country it will reflect in the Immigration computer system that he is outside canada. well, just a thought.

Immigration doesn't scan people when they leave so it is unlikely that they know that he left. He does not have to say that he is in Canada. He can say that he has an address in Canada which is true because he does have a secure mailing address for the PR card to be delivered to. He would therefore not be lying about anything even though he is being deceptive by having the letter mailed from within.

For the first PR card, if it's less than 6 months since you landed, you should not have to fill out a PR card application.

Leon,
Thanks a lot for your reply. The only issue is that I told the IO that I will be returning back to the US the same day and plan to immigrate later.Would this be a problem. Also in the below link provided by you I read that they ask for a copy of plane ticket. Will that be a issue.

If they didn't register you leaving, how would they know that you actually left after one day or if your plans changed? I am saying you can try it but if you do not want to, then wait until you are back in Canada to stay and apply for the PR card then. If you wait longer than 6 months from landing, it will not be enough just to update the address. You will have to fill out an application for your PR card and pay the fee.

The form I linked to is actually the guide for people who are applying to renew their PR card but the address should still be the same, same office. It says that if people who are renewing their PR card need faster processing because they are travelling soon, they should send a copy of their plane ticket. This does not apply to you.

Leon,
Thanks a lot for your response. I and my spouse both are permanant residents. So should I write one letter for myself and one for my spouse or should I write just one letter.
I really appreciate your help. Thank you for your patience

Write one letter to say that you both have an address. You can both sign it.
