We also had a bad lawyer that gave us similar advice. Told my partner to apply to extend his OWP even though we did not have an active sponsorship application on file. The application was obviously unsuccessful and as a result my partner was out of status when we applied. We didn’t even know we had an option to change his status to a visitor before his OWP expired. A lot of incompetent and money hungry lawyers, very disappointing. At least you can still do restoration.

Hey guys, I just wanted to say here: do not confuse consultants (who very often claim to be lawyers) with the actual lawyers. Stories like that are more likely to happen with consultants' advice. I had such an experience, and still have to deal with it. If you need an immigration lawyer, again not a consultant, go online to lawyer.com and you will find a good lawyer. Also, you can check a certain lawyer on the province's law society website. This is important because the legal profession is strictly regulated, and sanctions for misadvice are dire for lawyers.
Thank you for the advice, it’s really important to research before choosing someone to help with such an important matter. We learned this the hard way. Unfortunately our guy was/is 100% a lawyer
