hi everyone, i need help. i am under the live-in caregiver but my employer is planning to let me go since the old man im looking after already passed away. i dont want to continue working as a caregiver. i have a boyfriend here and we are looking into the common-law sponsorship. we dont want to get married yet, though we are planning to do so in the future. is it possible for us to live together after i quit my job as a live-in caregiver? am i still allowed to stay here in canada even though my employer will let me go? your response will greatly appreciated.. :-) thank you...

Hi

Yes, you can live together. I believe you need to change your status to visitor.

how will i do that? i still have a valid visitors visa and my work permit will expire december 2017. thank you for responding

Your work permit will be considered cancelled shortly after you stop working.

You need to ensure you have valid visitor status in Canada if you want to stay here to live with your partner for 1 year to become common-law. Of course during the time here as visitor only, you will not be able to work.

I believe this is the correct link to do this: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visitor.asp

oh ok.. :-) cant i just stay here til my work permit expires? dont i have a year to look for a new employer? can i use that time live with my boyfriend?

I believe the rules are different for Live In Caregivers when their job ends. I suggest you post in the Foreign Workers section of the forum and ask.
