I need some advice people! I'm American and my boyfriend is of course Canadian. I've been "living" in Canada over a year with my bf. My visitor visa is about to expire in a week! Eeeck :( I filed for extension but I should find out any day now if it gets denied or not. BUT ok here's what I need help with. I want to start a life with my common law parter in Canada sooooo...

1. Is my common law relationship legit? I stayed up here for almost a year with a visa.
2. Do I apply sponsorship within Canada or in the U.S.?
3. I would want to be able to cross the border to visit my family. Is that possible if I apply within Canada.

Any advice would be so helpful!

1) yes, as long as you lived together for 12 months straight you are common-law.
2) you can apply for either, but outside Canada is much faster
3) if you apply within Canada, I believe its best if you stay in the country, there is a chance for denial if u leave the country, or a chance they wont allow you back in again.

Just to be clear, you can apply "outland" while living in Canada with him, but you will need that visa you applied for. Once your app is being processed it should be easy to extend any visa you have, saying you want to be here while during processing.
