So my partner and I lived together for 1 year and 6 months in Canada and then he went back to the UK recently so he can work. Since we are living apart now, do we still count as common law? And can we eventually apply for a common sponsorship still?

Any reason why you did not apply at the time when you were actually living together or just didnt get around to it ?

Yes you can apply as common law as long as you have proof that you lived together for a continuous year.
Just to clarify. Does the proof have to be 1 piece that is continuous for a year? (For example: A joint bank account that has been opened for 1 year)

Or can it be multiple proof that make up a year? (For example: A joint bank account that has been opened for 10 months (Jan-Oct) and a credit card statement for the remaining two months (Nov-Dec))

He needed to get his passport renewed, but we would have to go to Ontario to get it renewed and it would be too costly.

It can be multiple proofs but if breaking it up like that, you should have several proofs covering each time period, i.e. another proof like payslips for Jan-Oct and a few shipping invoices for Nov-Dec.
